Schneider’s Big Win: Over 1 Million Miles in Clean, Green Electric Trucks

Schneider National Inc., a prominent player in the freight logistics industry, is making waves in the commercial electric vehicle (EV) space, celebrating a significant milestone as its fleet of electric trucks surpasses 1 million emission-free miles. The company’s commitment to sustainability, exemplified by its adoption of Daimler’s Freightliner eCascadia electric trucks, marks a pivotal moment in the transition toward greener transportation solutions.

Early Adoption and Partnership: As a trailblazer in the commercial segment, Schneider has been at the forefront of embracing sustainable freight alternatives, particularly electric trucks. The journey began with a partnership with Daimler Trucks North America, piloting the early eCascadia trucks in 2019 and 2020. Today, the fleet has expanded to nearly 100 vehicles, showcasing Schneider’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and embracing cutting-edge technology in the logistics industry.

Charging Infrastructure Accelerating Growth: To support the growing fleet of electric trucks, Schneider invested in a state-of-the-art charging hub at its operations center in California, emphasizing the importance of robust charging infrastructure in the successful deployment of electric vehicles. This facility, capable of fast charging up to 32 electric trucks simultaneously, played a crucial role in expediting the integration of Schneider’s electric trucks into its operations.

Impressive Milestones and Environmental Impact: Since the commencement of freight operations using electric trucks in January, Schneider has achieved remarkable milestones. The fleet, comprising 92 Daimler eCascadia battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and two all-electric yard spotters, has covered over 1 million miles, avoiding approximately 3.3 million pounds of carbon emissions. This achievement is a testament to Schneider’s commitment to sustainability and its contribution to reducing the environmental footprint of commercial transportation.

Customer Collaborations Driving Progress: Key collaborations with industry leaders such as Goodyear and Frito-Lay North America have played a pivotal role in Schneider’s journey toward sustainable transportation. Frito-Lay, a division of PepsiCo Foods North America, has actively participated in Schneider’s electrification strategy, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in building a sustainable food system. David Allen, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of PepsiCo Foods North America, highlighted their collaboration as a blueprint for achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

Looking Ahead: To commemorate this sustainability milestone, Schneider’s President and CEO, Mark Rourke, will ring the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) closing bell on November 21. Looking forward, Schneider remains dedicated to its environmental goals, aiming to reduce per-mile emissions by 7.5% by 2025 and an ambitious 60% by 2035. The company has already made significant progress, surpassing the halfway mark toward its 2025 emissions reduction goal.
